Michael Bloomberg is one of the wealthiest men on the planet. He was also Mayor of New York City and he has a lot of experience in government, even in dealing with national security because New York City has been the target of multiple terrorist attacks. Bloomberg was originally a member of the Republican Party but during his tenure in office he became an Independent politician. As a civic leader he often advocated programs that benefited poor people and the middle class, which is the kind of leadership this country needs. Bloomberg has not given himself over to the racist, ultraconservative ideas of most Republican presidential candidates. And he also accepts the science behind global warming.
No one is perfect but of all the potential Presidential nominees we have to choose from this year, Michael Bloomberg is a middle-of-the-road candidate who could win support from many moderates, conservatives, and liberals alike. He doesn't come with the political baggage that Hillary Clinton is dragging behind her. No one questions Michael Bloomberg's integrity the way we question hers. Nor is Bloomberg identified with socialism, which is not dangerous in the least but unfortunately has been confused by many voters with communism and totalitarianism.
I kind of like Bernie Sanders' ideas but he faces a lot of ideological opposition. People keep saying, "How would you pay for all these programs, Bernie?" I think the answer is obvious: you raise taxes. But his programs and taxes would probably be good for the country. The Republicans just want to cut taxes and pay for those taxes by slashing government services, but their proposals only make the deficit worse. Only the wealthiest Americans would benefit from a Republican government, and most of the billionaires like Michael Bloom say they don't want that.
Critics say that Michael Bloom is not electable as an independent candidate. I don't believe that. He would be the instant favorite for many of us because he's nowhere near as bad as all the bad or controversial choices in the race. If Bloomberg had run for the Democratic nomination he would have gotten it by now (in all but delegate counts because the primary season is just starting).
What this country needs is leadership that is not tainted with partisan politics. If we elect a Republican president the Congress will either support really stupid, hurtful programs or it will waste all of its energy fighting over really stupid, hurtful programs. If we elect a Democratic president we'll have the reverse problem: Congress will waste all of its energy fighting over policies the Republicans oppose at all costs. No one in either party has come out and said they would oppose any legislation proposed by Michael Bloomberg. He is stands in the middle and has an opportunity to work with both sides.
Of course, if Bloomberg runs for president he will have to declare his position on many issues. In doing so he will draw attacks from both sides because the Republicans and Democrats want to control the White House. But now may finally be the time to hand our leadership over to someone who is not beholden to either political party or to the special interest groups that fund presidential campaigns. Michael Bloomberg doesn't need their support. He just needs our support.
